Hapitok Goes Green!
In 2008, the camp theme was "Hapitok Goes Green". We focused on being an environmentally friendly camp, and taking steps to make Hapitok Green.
What does "go green" mean??
To "go green" does not imply jealousy or envy. To go green does not imply being grumpy like Oscar the Grouch. To go green does not imply to date only folks whom are Irish. It does not even mean to take a leap of faith and begin kissing all the Kermits in the world.
To "go green" means take care of where you live- Earth. Is that defined as chaining yourself to a tree in front of an impending massive bulldozer? No. Is it defined as using only products not tested on animals? No, again.
Going green means having the three R's become a part of your life. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Going green means paying attention to where your food comes from, and how its grown.
Going green means noticing how and when we can reduce our environmental footprint, and taking action to be able to make minor adjustments, that make major impact
We really focused on making wise choices for Hapitok. The focus was to make choices and do things that would have a lasting impact on our program.
Some of the things we did include:
- Cloth Napkins. We cut and sewed (thanks to Pinkie and Dragonfly for ALL the sewing) over 300 cloth napkins. The fabric was donated, and it meant we used cloth napkins at every meal including our large sponsor lunches.
- Replacing burned out bulbs with CFL's
- Using existing Art Supplies for our Arts & Crafts and WOW projects.
- Request locally grown produce as donations.
- Visit an organic farm as our field Trip. Special thanks for Huasna Valley Farm for welcoming us with open arms.
We look forward to seeing these changes continue through out the years.
